I love this time of the year when the early vegetables and herbs begin to come alive in the garden. Each day I try to incorporate whatever I can from our small raised garden beds which often times leads to some pretty interesting combinations. This salad, for example. How easy can you get than slicing up a bunch of radishes, green onions and basil? But do you ever have a recipe just miss the mark?
The idea for this came from a trip we made to Little Cayman for a scuba diving adventure. The owner/hostess of the resort where we stayed for the week was a Cordon Bleu trained chef, Gladys. Knowing that she was such an expert, cookbook author, chef and all, I couldn’t wait to try this simple salad with my fresh-from-the-garden ingredients.
Well, folks, sometimes recipes just don’t click the A+ button for us. And this one didn’t. I sounded good. It was pretty to look at. I love all of the ingredients. But if was only just fair and I was disappointed. And I was none too happy that my precious garden ingredients were used in a way that didn’t flatter them. Hubby was gentle in his remarks, but I could tell that he, too, wasn’t a big fan. So this one will go down in the “needs improvement” file.
I’d love your opinions for doing just that.
Have you ever had a recipe failure? Did you just chunk it or did you go about to setting it right?
Here it is. Maybe you can fix it
- 4 packages radishes or equivalent in fresh
- 1 bunch green onions
- 1/2 cup fresh basil (I used Genovese.)
- 4 Tablespoons red wine vinegar
- 2 Tablespoons Dijon mustard
- 1/3 cup olive oil
- Wash, trim and thinly slice radishes.
- In a food processor, chop the onions and basil, add the vinegar and mustard, and slowly add oil through the feed tube. (I didn't use the food processor. I just chopped and whisked.)
- Pour over the radishes.
- Toss and chill. (The flavor did improve after several hours in the frig.)
- I think this recipe has potential. I'm just not quite sure what to do to it to make it tastier. I'd really love your ideas. I'll give them a try (or post a link on this post) to what you did to improve it.
I have recipe failures all the time. Wine helps make it better.
You always make me laugh;) ❌⭕️❌⭕️
These things are soooo disappointing. But at least the picture really is very pretty. 😉
You are sweet:). I think it can be redeemed??! Or maybe it just wasn’t meant to be?
I’m so glad that happens to you, too! I love radishes so much. But they don’t play well with others. I’ve never had much luck with them in salads either.
Oh Amy. It happens to me more often than I care to admit. I just wanted these radishes to do their thing in a really nice way. You’re right…they didn’t play well at all!
I have many recipe failures! I’m wondering if the ingredients in this were all too strong and perhaps blending something more bland would help?
That’s a good thought Jamie. Any suggestions on what to do with it? It just didn’t give me the taste I had hoped for.
