My appearance last week on THV 11 This Morning was all about the freezer. If you’ve been following along, you know that I’ve written and talked a lot about that lately. In addition to this appearance, I wrote a couple of pieces for Taste Arkansas with more specific ideas about what to do to get the best out of your home freezer. The overarching theme of all of those is: Clean it Out! Throw it Out! and Sort it Out!
I believe if you will follow those simple guidelines, you will be somewhat surprised at how much more efficient your freezer usage will become. It doesn’t do any good to have a freezer full of bargains if you don’t use them. Those bargains quickly become wasted dollars. And who has money to throw away these days?
And are you keeping an inventory of what’s in there? It doesn’t have to be fancy, just useful. Because we have a lake house with a freezer as well. I often get confused as to what’s where. Keeping a clipboard near each one which tells me what’s where really helps. I’ll just take a photo of the lake inventory at times so I can remember what I need to use and what I need to pick up at the market. I’m all about simple, ya’ll.
Even though I am retired, I still keep some made-ahead meals in my freezer. Retirees are busy people too:) Quiche is one of my favorites because it can be made in so many ways from such a wide variety of ingredients. Casseroles allow you to pull together small bits and pieces of leftovers or remainders into a tasty and filling meal. When I make Bolognese or similar sauces, I usually double the batch so that I can have some ready to go int he freezer. Using It Up Stir Fry is one of the best ways to quickly put a meal on the table.
I’m sure many of you have great tips on just how best to use your freezer. I’d love to hear what you do.
For my appearance on THV11 Feb. 10, we’ll be making truffles just in time for Valentine’s Day. What do you think? Will I be able to convince Tom to roll a few? Since he’s a dark chocolate fan, I may just have to make up a batch of those. Stay tuned:)
