We love making cookies at our house.  Perfect Daughter and I made dozens and dozens of a wide variety while she was growing up, but this Butter Sugar Cookie recipe was probably her favorite.  The Perfect Ones seem to enjoy it as well…they especially like the dough…don’t chastise…you know you want to eat it as well.

The keys to making these be super to use with cookie cutters are:  thoroughly chill the dough after mixing (and keep the unused portions chilled while you roll out the part you are using) and avoid using an excessive amount of flour while rolling out the dough.

Most important, however, if you are making these with kiddos is to have fun.  They won’t care about imperfections.  Actually, whatever they make will be perfect in their eyes…and should be in yours as well.

Oh, and make sure that you have TONS of sprinkles and sparkly sugar on handSmile,

Butter Sugar Cookies

Typically makes 4 – 5 dozen.
1 cup unsalted butter at room temperature
1 cup granulated sugar
1 egg, slightly beaten
1 Tablespoon milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
Assorted sprinkles and colored decorating sugars

Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.  Add in egg, milk and vanilla and mix well.  Combine flour, baking powder and salt. Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture in three portions, scraping the sides of the mixing bowl each time.  Form the dough into a flat disk.
Wrap the disk with plastic wrap and chill for at least two hours.  Longer is better if your sous chefs have the patience.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Lightly flour your work surface and roll the dough slightly more than 1/8-inch thick.  (This depends somewhat on your cookie cutters.)  Turn the dough over with each roll of the rolling pin.  Avoid excess flour.
Cut the dough into desired shapes with a floured cookie cutter.  Decorate as desired.  They are delicious just sprinkled with granulated sugar.
Bake at 350 degrees for 8 – 10 minutes.  Remove to a wire rack before they cool on the cookie sheet.
