Can you look at this image of our Lord and not weep?  Not be overwhelmed by grief, yet compassion?  Despair yet hope?  Sadness yet joy?

I think all too often the pictures and conceptions we have  of the Crucifixion are too nice.  The Crucifixion of Jesus Christ was anything but nice.  It was horrific.  More horrific than my mind can conceive.  The pain of even trying to do so is far greater than I can bear.

Yet, my Jesus did bear than ghastly pain for me.  He grieved for me in my sinful state.  And He loved me so much that he hung on a cross for me and died a gruesome, earthly death so that I might live a Heavenly one.

In the words of Max Lucado:

“God is on a cross.  The creator of the universe is being executed. Spit and blood are caked to his cheeks, and his lips are cracked and swollen.  Thorns rip his scalp.  His lungs scream with pain.  His legs knot with cramps….

And there is no one to save him, for he is sacrificing himself.

It is no normal six hours….it is no normal Friday.”
