There’s probably no homegrown food crop that I appreciate more than the tomato, and for my segment Tuesday, August 11, I’ll be talking tomatoes on THV11.  In spite of all they do to make a fully tasty out-of-season tomato, it just doesn’t happen for me.  I may buy fresh cherry or Roma varieties during the off season, but you won’t typically find me buying others.

I begin looking through seed options right after Christmas usually. Years ago I became very interested in growing heirloom varieties and, therefore, concentrated solely on those at a time when no one in this area had even heard of a Cherokee Purple.  In fact, one year I grew 33 different varieties. Not only did we have a large number of different types of tomatoes, it was an abundant crop year! My friends and neighbors loved us.  This year, I’m down to less than a dozen simply because I don’t have enough space for many more.
